Anybody have any ideas? I bumped my steering wheel with my knee as I was getting into my truck, making it lock. Well it's stuck that way--it won't let the key turn to unlock the wheel. How do I get my truck to start?

PLEASE DON'T SUGGEST I WIGGLE IT. Of course that was the first thing I tried. Tried wiggling it and pulling it both directions, tried moving the tilt. Usually that works. Not today, it's locked up solid.

Where's the smiley with the truck sitting on top of a lit pile of dynamite? I think this is her revenge for thinking about selling her. Oh yeah, and I have to buy a brand new radiator too. But I have to get it started first.

"Tried wiggling it and pulling it both directions"

Did you do this while attempting to rotate the key switch at the same time? I have had this happen to me before. As far as I know this is the only thing that will work. The steering lock is jammed against the rotary arm and moving the steering wheel from side to side is the only way that it will allow the lock to move and the rotary arms to extend. Keep working with it and I am certain this will get it. Just go side to side with the steering wheel while keeping constant pressure on the key switch.

BTW is this a Chevy?

I had the same thing happen on my Nissan. I had to really torque on the wheel while turning the key to get it undone. If that doesn't do it, I'm fresh out of ideas.

Good luck!

Are you using the right key??

I've also had to put godawful amounts of torque on my steering wheel to get it unlocked, especially if parked on a hill with the wheels turned just right. 'tis a major PITA

Reef on that bugger, FC!

Thanks.

Of course I tried wiggling it WHILE turning the key.

No it's not a Chevy, it's a Toyota.

I turned it as hard as I could.

Sounds like maybe you need to get Pred to come over and "reef" on it or there always is the option of a large screwdriver & hammer.

screwdriver & hammer?

I too had that happen with one of our vehicles and I just persisted in twisting and yanking until I got it unstuck, but it sounds like you have done all this.

Good luck!

Yeah but I'll bet you wouldn't have that steering wheel locking up problem anymore.

I've got to agree with the rest here, I've done this before and the only way is to twist the wheel so hard you think you're going to break it off, while turning the key. If it's really bad you might need an extra set of hands to pull on the wheel. Just keep trying to turn it the same direction as the way it turned when you bumped it with your knee.

this once happened to me with my tacoma. I ended up putting it in neutral a pushed it while pulling down on the steering wheel.

Sharla, have you been drinking?

No, I wish! I seriously pulled and twisted the wheel as hard as I could. I put it in neutral and rocked it back and forth. I may have to have it towed. I will try some WD40 at lunch, the mechanic next door to work said to try that. Damn damn damn.

Slide-hammer.

My sister had something similar happen to a Honda accord she used to own. When you put the key in the ignition, it wouldn't turn. She had to have it towed. It turned out to be a defective ignition switch.

Posted by: TwistNShout---------------------

Sounds like it is stuck pretty good.

Posted by: firecracker22---------------------

Well, I had a mechanic come get it and he got it to start, but he said the key still wasn't working right. He ordered a new ignition cylinder and will put it in tomorrow. My new radiator is also in, so hopefully by tomorrow evening she will be all put back together.

You know what sucks the most about all of this?

I HAVE TO RIDE MY BIKE TO WORK!!!!!!

It's not far, but I'm lazy. Yuck.

Posted by: Patman---------------------

See I told ya'! Slide hammer or screwdriver & hammer would have fixed it and your getting a new key cylinder anyway.

Posted by: firecracker22---------------------

Yeah yeah yeah, but I wasn't about to attack my truck with large tools. I'll let somebody who will warranty their work do that part.
