Help - how do I get an ownership for a bike that the owner never registered?

Just agreed to buy an 87 KDX200 for my GF off that auction site.
And I just talked to the owner who said he never bothered to register it.
I NEED the ownership to be able to register it here in Canada and get off-road plate and insurance (required up here in Canada for public lands).
He said he is going to call the local DMV to see what to do.
Ideas? Is it possible at this point? What is he going to do, find out the last registered owner and try to get them to do it?
This ever happen to anyone else?
Thanks for any help.

Good luck with that. I had that happen when I bought a boat that the previous owner never registered the trailer for it. I had to do some convincing through the dealership that it was originally purchased from to get them to tell DMV that the boat was actually new, but I don't think that is possible in your case.
What is going on is that DMV wants their money (past due registration and taxes). The person you are buying the bike from will likely have to pay that.

So if the current owner pays the taxes and fees, then it's possible?
Can't he just say he bought it for $100 since it is a POS or something (it's not really, but the DMV doesn't know)?
Thanks,
Phil

Maybe. Who knows? Trying to convince DMV of anything is always tough. Plus, I've found that getting a seller to pay back taxes on something they are selling is VERY tough. That is the route I would take though. Does the seller at least have a certificate of origin or any original paperwork on the bike?

I checked in Oklahoma and there is no registration, etc. possible or required for off-road vehicles except boats. I've got a bill of sale for the KDX I recently purchased, but doubt it'll ever be used for anything. Non-commercial and farm trailers in Oklahoma or Kansas don't require tags, registration, inspection, etc. either. My point is that he may not have had any registration requirements.
In Texas, even the tiny trailers pulled by touring motorcycles had tags and yearly inspection; it varies widely.
The buyer would be wise to verify any required tags, registration, title, leins, etc. are up-to-date before purchase of anything. If the seller lied about such things, get them to make it right before payment.

An 87 KDX wouldn't have needed to be registered when new, would it? At least here in Ohio, they didn't do that until the mid 90s. Back in 87 were dirtbikes registered in Canada?
I've looked into having my 89 KX titled and registered. Here are the steps as I recall:
1- take bike to car dealer to have VIN verified.
2- take verification to County Courthouse and apply for title.
3- take title to BMV and get registration.

Well apparently the seller looked into it and said he can't get the title, only the person who is currently registered (two owners ago) and the dmv wouldn't give him the name and adrress to contact them so I'm out of luck.
Thanks,
Phil

Here you can fill out a statement of facts and state just what you said. You put on there that you did your best at locating the old owners but were unable to, they will then have you get the bike Vin verified, fill out a new title form and pay tax on the value. If it has never been registered, DMV will not have any previous ownership to base fees on, which works in your favor because there are no back fees due since they can't find an owner. If you go to your DMV and tell them that you bought the bike, get a bill of sale from the seller, that will usually fly.
