Arnego2 brings up an excellent point that I failed to mention as part of the mechanical soundness checks. The crank seal on the gearbox side is a prime candidate for this type of issue especially on a used bike. Change the gearbox oil, measure in an exact amount and then re-measure it next time you change it. It could give you an indication whether or not the gearbox oil is being burned. If you are unsure on who to trust for an oil recommendation I'd suggest following the guidelines of the manufacturer of the oil. They know what the additive package is in the oil, so they have the best idea of how it should be mixed for the conditions and engine type.
