Petcock is an old term for gas tap. Try this... pull the hose off the carburetor (the one that connects the petcock to the carb) and put the hose on the end of a plastic bottle. Make sure the petcock is off an the extra fuel has drained from the tube. Now, let it sit overnight. Did any fuel leak out? If so, you have a faulty petcock. Whether it does or doesn't, you still have something going on which is letting neat fuel into the engine. I'd suspect the float. If you take the float bowl off the carb, a screw or two is all that usually holds the float in place. Take the float out and shake it to see if you hear gas inside. If so, replace the float. Under the float is a needle and seat. Inspect these for wear. If they have grooves, replace them as they are likely leaking fuel into the bowl. Let's start there and see where we get.
