new end do it yourself, is this smart??

i recently bought a 1997 rm 125 and wondering if I should get a new piston set and gaskets?? I have the owners manual but have never even touched a bike before. Should I try and replace the piston and put new gaskets, bearings and rings?? I want the bike to run good, and I thought that this may help. Also what about brands I see vertex and wiseco any idea of whats good or bad??

Its pretty easy to do yourself if you have a manual.
I would try and get someone with some experieince to be there with you the first time.
