Lonely, ghost of a "downtown" in central Oklahoma. This guy has been a fixture there for years. They call him 8-Track because he "collects" them. He's mentally "challenged" and pretty much just makes his way up and down main street all day, with his sack of 8-track tapes.

That is awesome shot. That's the effect that Phil asked me about this past weekend, where the photo is B&W except for one object in it.

It's done with masking.
Dupe layer, desaturated.
Then the mask tool to "paint" the area that you want to show through (the color layer).
And that's two objects :p

See the box with the white circle at the bottom of the layer pallet.
Then select the paint brush to paint the area.
Paint brush colors white/black. Black cuts thru to the bottom layer (the color one) White covers the bottom layer (color).

Masks are how I put the blur in that pic of will .... just added a motion blur to the new layer, then masked the bike and rider out. It was a qucik and dirty job just for Chili's panning comment.

You can use the same technique to simulate DOF...

I did use the blur tool to manually blur the background on a pic from Red Bud from last year. It took me forever. I was blurring it on the same layer as the picture, I think...

Anytime you mess with an image, you should use layers to do it, even just sharpening, sat, whatever, make an adjustment layer. ( Layer > New Adjustment Layer )

Thanks Rich ... I shot it from the car, while rolling down the road lol.

BTW, besides the layer mask, I also made another layer (copy) and used an overlay fill at 70% to add more punch/age to it.
