Have to leave clearance for that junk that freezes on the chain. That might be why you are snapping chains. The renthal is not stock on the 2001 I have. It had a WMP or something made in Italy. I still have the origional chain...amazing. I swapped to D.I.D on my other bikes. Try loosening that chain. Also if that is your issue be glad its just the chain.
