In 2001, Dirtweek was almost cancelled due to the hainous act of terrorism carried out by cowards of a misguided idiology. DW05 stands to suffer from a more tragic and catastrophic natural disaster. Here is my call:
  1. For those that can attend without undo financial crisis, do so.
  2. If you can help transport someone to DW05 to offset their/your expenses, please, do so.
  3. For those that just can't do it, make a contribution, however small, to the American Red Cross or the Salvation Army for the relief effort in the Gulf States.
  4. To everyone that reads this thread, make a contribution in money or volunteer in someway to help Americans rebuild their lives.
With the cost of fuel, many DW05 attendees will be hard pressed to actually make it. I know from experience that if a person makes it to Cooperland, they will have food and shelter amoung friends.
DW01 brought the DRN community together in a way only a few can discribe. However, the Spirit has grown in the past years. Our friends cross all boundries with compassion and hope, do your part if you can do so without material injury to yourself or family.
MY DRN family rocks, does yours?

If you can get there, consider the rest taken care of. I can help feed some of the folks when we get there if the need arises, and don't be afraid to ask. ;)

Good Form!

Brian,
Good form on this post! That kind of spirit is really infectious and a great thing to share!
Looking on the DW05 sign up list, there's a family by the name of Folse (Caleb, Melissa, Matt & Michael) from LA. Does anyone know their status? Were they affected, is their house okay, are they still coming to DW... etc. Would certainly like to know how they're doing. Thanks!

Dave:

To the best of my knowledge, we have not heard from mafols (Matt Folse) or junkjeeps (Mark Forshag). I do not have contact information for Matt, but have sent a couple of emails to Mark that have not been responded to.

Thanks Brian, we needed that! Camp Tejas can both cover heads and feed folks.

Tony-I tried the "Katrina People Finder" link off Yahoo!'s home page, but neither of those names turned up. I bought that beater TTR from junkjeeps, but don't think I ever saved his phone numbers.

FYI
Junkjeeps contacted Jay (MX547), said he's good and trying to make DirtWeek.

Back online

Finally got back online at my parents tonight. Just got electricity at my house this afternoon(it's been out since last Monday) and haven't heard when cable/internet will be restored. I did ok. No damage to my house, but lost quite a few trees. I've been slowly dragging them up on the levee to get them out of the yard. My pool is horrible. The pump hasn't run in 2 weeks and the water has turned black and smells terrible. Matt Folse and his family are in good shape and we are all still planning on attending DW. Haven't actually talked to him yet, but heard through the grapevine he faired well. It's a mess around here. Neighboring parishes aren't being allowed back to their homes for weeks. Lots of people displaced with few places to go. Within the first 5 days all homes that were for sale have sold. It's definitely a sellers market. People are getting top dollar for homes. Lines in most places to get gas, food, etc. Wal-mart is only allowing 10 people in the store at a time and you are escorted the entire time. Lots of National Guard and military MP's running around. It should calm down in a few weeks. We haven't had any of the crime/lootings that you guys have probably seen on TV. They did hit a couple of drug stores right after the storm but not the major looting like you saw on Fox News. I think most were trying to ease a fix, not get new TV's and tennis shoes. I haven't gotten into my email yet, but hope to in a few days.

Thanks guys for asking about us  My family also fared well for the storm. We live just far enough from N.O. (45 miles) to be spared. We did experience winds in excess of 100mph but no major damage. It's amazing that 30-40 miles can make such a difference with a storm that size. My internet service was the last thing to be restored at home.

I have to say that it's been very emotional for me to see the nations outpouring for the victims of this storm. I have to give the national media some credit for bringing the story to the rest of the country....however their thirst for sensationalism and top ratings has at times painted the wrong picture IMO.

We will be attending DW and are looking forward to it.

Again...thanks for your concern.

Matt,

This is Lisa from Browning Fork Trailhouse. Marty has asked me several times if I had seen you online. I couldn't find your email address. I had not been on this site since summer. We are thrilled that you and your family suffered no major damage from the hurricane. We remembered you all in our prayers.

Again, we are delighted to find that you and your family are all right.

Thanks for asking Lisa,

We are all doing just fine. I was telling someone just last week about how great a time we had there. We were looking at pictures from our weekend in WV. I'd like to go back another time when the weather isn't such a factor. Tell ole' Marty that we'll see him again some day....we really enjoyed hanging out with him. Every time I go somewhere new I like to learn about the area from a locals perspective....as opposed to some "tourist guide". We couldn't have asked for a more accommodating host.

Hope your family is doing well...again, thanks for asking.

Matt,

Again, we are glad to hear that you fared so well. Marty, Daniel and I are doing well. Marty, of course, is staying busy entertaining the trailriders. That is where he is at right now. He is out by the campfire talking with the riders.

I have to agree--Marty is a great host. He loves meeting all the riders and finding out about their lives. I have to admit that he enjoys tasting/eating the cuisine of the riders from different parts of the country.

Marty was really worried that something may have happened to you. He has mentioned you to me several times since the hurricane. He has told several riders about the crawdads you brought.

May, June, September, and October are good times to visit the trails. We normally don't have an excessive amount of rain then. It is not too dry and dusty either. The temperatures are usually are not too extreme.

We both hope that you will return to the Hatfield McCoy Trails and Browning Fork Trailhouse.

Take care,

Lisa
