Would ordering a base gasket to inspect the top end of my 97yz125 be dumb? Or would it be better to just order everything and do the top end? Its a stock 97 and runs amazing and I want to keep it that way! I was thinking just getting the $$ and ordering the top end but if the plating was worn? My friends 98yz125 needed a replate at its 1st top end but he never cleans his airfilter nor does he oil it.

how about doing a compression test before you dissasemble your machine? If your comp is below the factory recomended psi for a worn out top end then you will have to buy at minimum a ring and some gaskets. But in reality the expence of a complete top end set is so small that having one on hand at all times would be adventageous. As for the plateing question if the machine had regular maintenence and not allowed to seize or digest any dirt or metal chances are good it will still be in spec.
