The Yamaha YZ450FX was introduced in 2016 and is based on the previous-generation (2014 to 2017) YZ450F motocross bike, seeing as the 2018 YZ450F is all-new and therefore doesn’t share as many components with the ’18 YZ450FX. The blue off-roader is designed for closed-course racing such as GNCCs and hare scrambles, therefore it features a number of differences from the 2014 to 2017 YZ450F, such as an electric starter, a wide-ratio transmission, 18-inch rear wheel, sealed O-ring chain, kickstand, and a skid plate.

After mounting a Dunlop D404 street tire to ensure an accurate reading, we put the YZ450FX on our in-house DynoJet dynamometer. The blue off-road motorcycle put 50.5 hp to the rear wheel at 9,250 rpm and 32.4 pound-feet of torque at 6,940 rpm. We refilled the bike with fuel to procure a correct, ready-to-ride wet weight on our automotive weight scales, where the Yamaha weighed in at 262 pounds. Now that we’ve gathered the necessary off-the-trail information we need, we’ll be taking it out into the hills and putting it through some rigorous off-road testing, so stay tuned for a first ride review followed by the full review in the coming…
