After a 29 year run at the Pontiac Silverdome, the end of an era has officially come to a close.

The last SX event in April 2005 was the 46th Supercross race held at the Silverdome – which makes it the most frequently visited building in supercross history.

The first event was held back in 1976 (won by Team Honda’s Marty Smith). From 1977-1993, the Silverdome held weekend double-header races. However, in 1985, the event had to be canceled when the roof gave way to a massive snowstorm.

I remember when they used to loop part of the track up into the top of the seating section of the lower bowl! It was wild watching riders race up into the stands, then shoot back down to the main track.

Detroit will host the 2006 Supercross on March 25th at Ford Field. This is an awesome facility... can't wait to see it filled with truckloads of dirt and the smell of pre-mix!

And by the numbers....

Silverdome
Capacity: 80,000
Field Size: 94,000 sq. ft

Ford Field
Capacity: 65,000
Field Size: 97,000 sq. ft

What's the official word on the Silverdome? Is it being torn down?
Never been to Ford Field, will it be a pain to get to it?

It's being torn down after the Superbowl around the February 2006 timeframe. It's only hanging around so one of the teams can use it for practice.
