Ok guys , I just picked up a used 2000 yz 250.
It is in pretty good shape, BUT!
I am no expert.
I want to do some care to it, and want to replace the trans oil.
I know it says it takes.3/4 a quart or so.
I contacted my local yamaha dealer, and they told me to use the window to see where I am at!
the problem is, it doesn't have a window on the cover!
I then visited a local mx repair shop, and they pulled the bike up on there parts computer, and it too says my 2000 yz 250 has a cover with a window>

I double checked the vin number to check year, and it is a 2000.
next I bought a service manual, an off brand, that covers 125/250's from 1996 to 2003
and in it it says my bike has a over fill screw( shown in a picture) but again, my bike doesn't have this either!
next it says there should be a screw with a coper washer, that can be backed out to check level!
I don't have one of these either!
the only screw near it is on the water pump, drain screw!

the cover on my bike says Yamaha, and the 750 on oil! so I believe the cover is factory!
so I am at a loss.

I have been told to just drain and fill with 3/4 a QT, buty I would rather find out where the fill; to level screw is to know i don't have too much or little in it!
I am no mr fix it, and new to repairs and bikes!
so I need some help here

It sounds like your techs are in four-stroke land, where the gearbox of the YZ250(F) probably has a window.

I'd imagine your motor has a gearbox fill hole, and a weep hole. You remove both the weep hole bolt, and the fill hole plug, then start adding until it weeps out the weep hole. You can probably safely push it to 800 cc or 850cc without it foaming and spewing out the vent hole when you flog it. It's easy to see the level on the sides of your quart bottle, just look at it, and stop filling when you reach 200ml mark on the bottle. If you leave 200ml in the bottle, you will have added 750cc worth of oil to your gearbox.

but the info on this bike says it has a view window, on both the yamaha micro fiche, and in my universal manual1

as for the weep hole, That too is missing from the manuals, as well as my cover
thanks kinda my problem,
I cannot find the weep screw to remove as i fill!

I can send an e-mail with pics of my cover to anyone willing to help me!

It does not have a view window. It does, however, have an oil level drain bolt. That water pump drain screw (phillips head) you were talking about, look immediately to its left at the same level about 1 1/2" over and you will see an 8mm bolt sitting just to the right of the bottom right bolt that holds on the side cover. That's the bolt. It should have a small copper squash washer, but commonly people have taken those off/lost them and forget about them.

Those seep levels are notoriously off because it's darn difficult to get your bike on perfectly level ground both front to back and side to side. Just get a ratio rite cup, or anything that measures cc's, and fill it full of 750 cc's of tranny oil like it says on your clutch cover and be done with it. Also, just continue to replace your tranny fluid about every 3 rides or so and you will not need to worry about too much or too little oil because you will be changing it so often. Remember, you will pretty consistently have more oil in your bottom end after riding a bit because you will have some unburnt residual premix that makes its way to the bottom end, albeit a minor amount.

Also, you can feel free to buy expensive bike gear oil, or do what myself and a bunch of yz owners do and go to your local autostore, or even walmart, and buy ATF type F (Automatic Transmission Fluid type F). A bunch of motorcycle mechanics I know that ride yz's use this stuff over expensive gear oil so just a little tip to save you quite a bit of money in the long run.

That being said, I never skimp on pre-mix oil. I always run a quality mx oriented premix. None of that pwc or small engine premix from the local auto store ever gets put in my bike.

as for the weep screw, I still cannot find one on the bike. ( none of the screws have the coper washer, and I can see them not going back on!) BUT
& all of my side cover screws are socket heads!
and as for oils,
the manual says, 10w40 for it!
and not trans or gear oil!

I have no probelm just changing it, but again, I would like to learn where the weep screw really is, so that I never OVER fill!

and I always use quality pre mix too! cheap insurance in my eyes!
I don't race either so, I think I can just change fluids on a hour basis as well, rather than on number of rides!

thinking about every 10 hrs!
I don't ride very hard, still; getting back into shape and form!

If I sent you an e-mail picture of my case, can you show me what screw is the weep one??

It is a socket bolt as well, the same size as your clutch cover bolts. 10w30 will work, but it also tends to give some issues with the wet clutch setup. From a long line of yz riders and mechanics, atf type F seems to be the running standard. Just make sure to get TYPE F.

I would be willing to guess that if there is a copper washer, you are not seeing it because its outer diameter is slightly smaller than the outer lip diameter of the hex head bolt that we're talking about. When looking at the clutch cover, look at the bottom right bolt that's almost directly left of the coolant drain. Once you see that bolt, look just to the right side of it and that's the bolt you need to remove. If you're still not finding it, pm me and I'll send you my email address. I'll point it out to you...

Now just need to learn to ride better, and I'm workinmg on that
being off a bike for so long and getting back on,
I ain't as young or flexiable as i used to be!
but still having fun tying!
