I'm trying to decide between buying a buying a new 2002 250exc 4stroke or a 2003 450exc 4 stroke. I can get a much better deal on the 250 since it is a leftover. Which would be the better bike for tight new england woods?
My best friend just got a 96 EXC 400 (or is it an SC?) (the KTM lettering system is beyond me). its awesome. its his first dirtbike and we ride some very tight, brushy, rooty, rocky, muddy trails here in WA. it is at one time both forgiving and brutally powerful. very rideable (even for beginners) in tight stuff.
if the 450 EXC's are like the previous 400's, i say get the 450. i've never ridden any of the smaller KTM 4 strks. i'm sure they are great.
The KTM RFS (racing four stroke) line was introduced in 2000 and has proven to be a very solid and reliable design. I switched from an XR to an 02 400 EXC and am extremely happy with the KTM.
On which bike to choose, I'd favor the 03 450, unless you're a relatively new or light rider. Most first and second hand reports I've heard on the new 250 RFS suggest that it is lacking in the power area. The power of my 400 is easy to handle in tight woods/singletrack. I've heard the same from guys who are now riding the new 03 450s. The suspension and ergos are very good and should be identical on either the 250 or new 450.
The 02' 250 is almost the exact same as the 02' 400, the only difference is the displacement. I think both would do great, yet if you have a couple hills to climb or deep mud/sand then the extra power of a 450 might be worth it :thumb:
Thanks Guys,
I'm riding a YZ144 right now and I'm looking for something with a lot more low power so the 450 might be the bike. Almost the same weight as the 250 too.
