84/ 86 kdx 200

i just got an 84kdx 200 motor and pipe,coil cdi for 50 bucks. my 86 kdx 200 has a blown motor. the problem is i got 88 gasket set will it fit ?. the dealer around here is an you know what. will swap the motor soon .the 84 bottom is free and no side to side movment or up and down, looks very clean top end will bore and new piston . all help on which way to go will be great thanks alot. new to forum thanks and are all air cool 200 motors the same?

'83 - '85 are very similar to one another, except for minor changes to carb and pipe.

'86 - '88 are very similar to one another and motor is based on the '83 - '85, but has a KIPS exhaust valve.

So an '88 gasket set should work fine on an '86. Many of the gaskets should also work on the '84.

I would think the '84 motor would physically fit and line up into your '86 frame. I doubt the '84 pipe would line up, as '84 and '86 had different frames. Not sure if the '86 pipe would mount up to the '84 cylinder, due to one having KIPS valve and the other not.

kdx 200 rebuild

i have a shop in mass that will rebuild my bottomend on an 86 motor for 300-400 if i buy my own gaskets. sounds good . i wanted to do it myself so i can learn to do it .which book is the best to use?

I prefer the Kawasaki manual over the Clymer, but both are very good.

kdx200

i have two motors 84 which needs to be re-sleeved but has a good bottom or a 86 which needs a piston and the bottomend rebuilt. the bike is an 86 which do you think is the cheaper way to go????

you can sell the flywheel from the 84 and have a good start on rebuilding the 86 or part both bikes out and get a kx250 or kdx200 95-06

I would not recomend messing around with those older bikes other than parting them out but if you must then rebuild the engine for the frame it goes to and be ready to replace everything else on the bike too
