If you zoom in on the panels you can find the main campgrounds. For day trips, there are many other places you can stage.
Much of where you stage depends on how you get there. Most guys from LA/SoCal go up the 395, and stage on the east side of the riding area. I drive up on Sherman Pass Road from the west, and stage in the western half of the riding area (about 2 hour drive from Bakersfield).
There is only one trail connecting the east and west parts of the riding area (Beach Trail). It's a fairly demanding rocky climb up to the west (and Bonita Camp), which discourages many from connecting the two halfs.
If you have a big enough tank to do 60 - 70 miles of single track, you can make killer rides on either side, or do one ride that covers some excellent trails on both east and west sides. Since some of the trails dead end, you may have to back track, but the trails are so good you won't mind. Fuel mileage is usually good up there, because you are rarely on the main jet (at least I'm not, lol).
Many of the trails are more technical and demanding than other riding areas, so 60 - 70 miles is a long day for just about anyone. 30 - 40 miles up there is plenty for most riders.
Trails up there close when the snows come, and stay closed until the fallen trees are cleared after the snow melts. So riding season is roughly June - November most years. Late June - mid July is KILLER (spring time at 9,000').
Ha....I made that hill on my 125 (when it was new) without even shifting down on the way up. Now it only makes it about as far as those dual sport guys did.
Last time I tried it on the 450 and messed up at the top anyway (with my daughter looking on).
Sometimes it's easy and sometimes it a little looser and more rutted.
