Need to reduce the power of a CR80

What can I do to reduce and smooth out the power of a CR80 to make it more trail ride able for my son. He is use to 4 stroke power. Would replacing the cylinder gasket with a thinner one to reduce the port timing and a thicker gasket for the cylinder head to reduce the compression of the engine accomplish this change? Or what other options do you recommend?

We can detune and shift the power down and you can just stack base gaskets to incrementally raise the powerband as he gets more skilled.
