I'm thinking of going up Thursday like last year - up the 5 then over Donner Pass so as to avoid any possible problems with the 395 and snow closure. Coming back Monday.

Kiwi- My plan was to go straight up the 15 to the 395.

Please post directions for the 5. It would be nice to have a alternate plan.

I have never driven to Reno so I really have no idea which is the best route.

395 can be a great drive if the road isn't closed north of Mammoth. Just check the CHP/CalTrans for road conditions before you leave.

To go I5 you need to get to Bakersfield and then head north on I5 to Sacramento, take I80 East to Reno and you cross the Sierra's over Donner Pass. The good thing about I5/I80 is that I80 is a major trucking route and is usually kept pretty clear.

From Fontana I'd take 395 if the weather & roads are good. If the weather is at all questionable I'd take I5.
