removing fork springs (crf 50) ????

Today I took my forks apart on my 50 to replace them with some h/d springs. It appears that they are just twisted onto the fork leg and the stopper at the top, but I had no luck unscrewing them and am now totally confused how to get them off. Is there a special tool to do this or am I just not twisting the springs hard enough? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
