A good start is fresh reeds! Even new stock reeds will make a huge difference over reeds that may be worn out. I use power reeds somewhat cheaper but better than stock reads.
As Flyboy stated...new reeds will make a big difference.....especially if they are worn out/cracked....it will be easier to start. Stock reeds are good (thats what I am running in my 01 CR500.....Boyeson Carbon reeds are good aslo. I run a VForce in my 89 CR500.....nice difference on throttle response! I hear the Rad Valves also have their good points.....its a solid piece and that cuts the chance of an airleak in that area, but the reeds wear quickly. The VForce reeds last longer but have a crappy sealing surface that is prone to airleaks...seal it will silicone.
