Two Coils?

Hello All,
I just bought a PW for the kids a few days ago. It was not running, so I got it home and went to work on the little guy.

Long story short...it will spark with the plug boot off, but just barely. (so, we have a bad source coil) I went into the flywheel and stator, and found a lighting coil and an ignition coil. They were connected by one wire of the lighting coil.

Why is there a lighting coil, and why are the two connected?? I ordered an ignition coil before my discovery, and I'm perplexed.

Anyone have an answer as to the lighting coil??

I checked the Yamaha site and it shows that set-up for all years.

why dont you try a new plug.

If Im not mistaken one is a low speed coil like when your kick starting it and the other is for higher rpms

Thanks for the input. I tested a known "Good" set-up and it fired right over. I'm replacinb both. Thanks
